UPDATE: Mexico pollution alert extended

Mexico City authorities have extended a pollution alert as a cloud of smog continues to cover the city, reports France24.

Dozens of wildfires have combined with hot, dry weather to cause a sharp rise in air pollution across a swathe of central Mexico.

Today marks the fourth day under the emergency measures.

The authorities have restricted the use of older vehicles, shut down construction sites larger than 5,000 square meteres (55,000 square feet), and ordered certain polluting industries to cut their emissions by 30 to 40 percent.
