The Department of Home Affairs (DHA) has launched its Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS), News24 reports.
The Minister of Home Affairs, Malusi Gigaba, earlier today confirmed that the launch of ABIS is an important part of the Department’s Modernisation Programme.
ABIS is an identification and security solution powered by sustainable technology and will offer a single view of citizens across their life cycle and their status changes at various stages.
The DHA says ABIS is set to replace the Home Affairs National Identity System (HANIS), which is "manually operated and outdated".
The project will be rolled out in phases over a five year period, with implementation involving migration of the current HANIS data.
The plan will integrate HANIS and the Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS) into an automated system through ABIS which will identify and verify people through fingerprints, facial recognition and IRIS technology.
The new biometric system is expected to enable quicker response times at ports of entry.
