The Cape Town City Hall will be closed until July next year while it undergoes a major upgrade, Travel and Meetings Buyer says.
The City of Cape Town is doing a major overhaul of the hall and its surrounds in an effort to increase its appeal as an events venue.
The revamp started a few months ago and repainting of the main entrance hall, refurbishment of the slate roof, and organ repairs have already been completed.
The auditorium is next to undergo an extensive revamp, which will include:
• Replacing the seating
• Floor restoration
• Repairing the stage and backstage area
• Restoring all of the mouldings
• Painting the auditorium
• Installing mechanical ventilation
• Installing a public address system
The surrounding precinct and the City Hall will also be positioned as an ideal musical events venue, in addition to being the home of the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra and Cape Choirs.
The upgrades will span the next three financial years and will cost in the region of R27-million.
