Uber to offer New York helicopter service

Uber’s new helicopter service, Uber Copter, will take passengers between Lower Manhattan and JFK in eight minutes.

Rides will cost between $200 (R2 977) and $225 (R3 350) per person and include private ground transportation at both ends of the trip.

Uber Copter will be available only to Platinum and Diamond members of the company’s loyalty programme, Uber Rewards.

Uber Copter can be booked on demand or up to five days in advance. The helicopters accommodate up to five people and will run from Monday to Friday during the afternoon rush hour.

In Manhattan, the helicopters will use a heliport near the Staten Island Ferry, and at JFK, they will use a helipad near Terminal 8.

Passengers will be picked up or dropped off by car in Manhattan, and at JFK they’ll be transported by car between the helicopter and the terminal.

Passengers will be allowed to bring one personal bag and one carry-on item weighing no more than 18kg.

The service will start on July 9.
