US: Hurricane Michael prompts state of emergency

A state of emergency has been declared in 26 counties in the Florida Panhandle, with Hurricane Michael expected to make landfall in the state tomorrow morning, TravelMole reports.

Hurricane Michael was upgraded to a Category 1 hurricane on Sunday evening, and has already hit parts of Mexico and Cuba. It is likely to be a Category 3 hurricane when it makes landfall in the Florida Panhandle.

In parts of Cuba, and on the coast of Mexico from Tulum to Cabo Catoche, a tropical storm warning is in effect. Gulf Coast residents have been told to prepare for evacuation orders, with more than 5 000 National Guard soldiers on alert.
