Monday Smile: Instagram account spotlighting weird hotel carpets goes viral

Bill Young is a typical Dallas dad with no idea of how Instagram is supposed to be used. As a corporate pilot who stays in hotels all over the world, he decided to start an account dedicated to weird hotel carpets. Not exactly something anyone ‘in the know’ would expect to go viral.

Surprisingly, his teenage daughter took to the idea, tweeting: “All I Want For Christmas is for my Dad’s hotel carpet Instagram to go viral, please help this happen.”

Jill Young’s, twitter audience only amounted to 694 followers at the time, however, the Internet is a magical place and within 48 hours her tweet had gone viral. In just two days her dad’s account spiked from 86 followers to 68 300. A day later he sat at 405 000 followers.

“It’s crazy. I still can’t believe it,” he told The Loop. “This is my 30 minutes of fame. It’s a fun thing. I don’t see this being a big life-changing event, but I feel like I have pressure to produce.”

Asked why he started the account, Young told ABC News: “The carpets are probably there to hide dirt, but they always caught my eye. Half the time, I’m walking around jetlagged, and you look down and it’s like, ‘What is this pyramid thing with these stripes coming off it?’ They always drew my eye as being crazy. You rarely see just a regular carpet you’d see in a house.”

Since Young’s growing popularity, the father-daughter duo have set their sights on an appearance on The Ellen Show. Jill has promised that if the Internet can get them on the talk show, her dad will perform “a dramatic slam poem about hotel carpets”.

So take a leaf out of the Youngs’ book and remember the old adage, ‘if you want something, all you have to do is ask’.
